Back in 1987, while Sasha was just a puppy, Debbie and I owned a Yamaha Virago. Sasha would always get excited when we'd get on the bike, so one day we decided to take her along. We created a monster... Every time I'd start the bike, she would pitch a fit until she could ride. It was the humble beginnings of a "Biker Dawg". The first picture [above], is of Sasha. We were about to go on a run to Cedar Island. Notice the goggles...they're called 'Doggles', [www.doggles.com] and are designed for dogs. They are 100% U.V. blockers, and keep her eyes safe from debris that might hurt her eyes. She was 13 years old in this picture, and we're trying to preserve her eyes. She's been fortunate to not have vision problems as of this time. Anyway, back to the puppy biker...
She became more and more accustomed to riding the bike with Debbie
and I. When Debbie would ride on the back, she would hold Sasha. I'd
see her face over my shoulder, mouth blown open by the wind, and ears
flopping all about. She was truly happy :-) . She would become extremely
excited to see us gathering up our riding jackets and helmets... She
new she was about to go on a ride! In the picture [below], you'll
see that while Debbie was checking directions, Sasha was ready to
GO! We had just stopped at a Burger King (in the background), and
had a quick lunch. This was taken on another run to the beach, about
500 miles 'round trip. Sasha had on her "blue blockers"
on this ride. The doggy seat was an improvization by myself. It was
a dishwasher basket...I removed the handles, attached it to the bike
with a few bungee straps, and wrapped blankets around and in it. An
old leash was attached to the basket, so she couldn't accidentally
jump out. She'll sit in this contraption and ride all day long. We'll
stop every 100 miles or so and water her, both ways, give her a snack,
and she's ready to go again. People will pull along side, and 'flip
out' when they see a dog riding. Sasha will 'ham it up' for the passers
by, and we've even had people to stop us on the side of the road to
take pictures. She's a lot of fun to take along. |

| Below is a picture of Sasha on a motorcycle trip to "The Hoot" in Knoxville, Tn...several hundred miles from home! She was there only a few days, and still managed to land in the Knoxville newspaper! You can e-mail Sasha at sasha@2vulcans.net. She'd love to hear from you!! Sasha has logged on many, many miles..the longest trip from North Carolina to Key West, Florida and back...2500 miles in 1 week....not bad for a 15 year old poodle! She's a great little girl and loves to ride. NCVulcan member #192, NC VRA #1-13-192B-800B3. Seems where ever she goes, she gets some attention. At the Hoot in Knoxville, Tn (a motorcycle rally), one of the local reporters captured her picture and placed it in their Saturday edition on 6/23/01. It had been raining, but Sasha didn't care...she was ready to ride! Here, she's several hundred miles from home, and still making the scene! |
